Some Advise Needed

I finally have made connection with my camera cord and could
show a couple of pictures of
my weekend sewing projects.

First up, I was working on my spools project...
and even though I think the fabric is really cute, and
I think the spool fabric is cute...
I think it's lacking a little something... don't you?
I was kind of playing with the idea of separating the black
spools from the grey spools and make two different quilts.
But I'm not sure that is what the problem is.
I need some input please, before I go further!

I worked on my BOM Rehab project also. I made up a setting for the blocks
and came up with this. I am pretty much happy with it...
unless it could use a big red border.
Hmmm... any thoughts?

I am anxious to get these projects out of the way...
because I want to start a little embroidery project
called Betsy's Closet- In Stitches by Brenda Riddle at
Acorn Quilt Company. A little group happened to have started up
right when I was determined to embark on this journey, so
now I have company in Betsy's Closet...

(notice button on sidebar)
which is great for me because I have a hard time
staying with embroidery... I think it's a need for speed,
and there isn't any speed for me in stitching!

Hey Sinta...I've joined the Betsy's closet stitch along, just need to get my supplies here... I think with your spools quilt you have been working on it too much, it is beautiful, have you thought about a border? Your Christmas quilt is great too, and I agree a red border would be perfect! I need to get working on my BOM rehab again. I'm hoping this weekend to have some rehab finished! :)

i think the spools are cute!! i have to get that pattern.

as far as your quilt, i don't thinks it's the difference of the black and grey as much as they are stacked against each other so the 'spools' look is lost and confusing.

perhaps adding a small strip of the background between the rows would help separate and make the fact it is spools better visually understood...

just my humble two cents worth :)

The spool quilt - maybe a skinny white sash to break them up - and yes a border. The christmas quilt needs a border to frame that pretty thing up. Good luck on your stitching - very cute pattern.

I like what you have so far on the spools quilt. I think all it needs is a darker border. Try laying the center out on something so you can see what you think. Same with the really cute Christmas quilt - just something else at the edge to stop the eye for both of them. And I LOVE the dresses quilt!

I was going to suggest the same as Shannon. A strip down between then to space them out a little.

I am joining you on the Betsy's stitch along also :) hugs, Sharon

I love the black and gray spools and I love how cheery it is. I think a nice colorful border would be fantastic. I know the pattern doesn't call for it but I think it would do the trick!

Dianne Mitzel said...

they do seem crowded, and definitely, a border..very cute and you'll be thrilled once you make some chances that enhance it..

Hhmm . . . The spools look overpowered by the ends. I think the other ideas about the white strip between should work.
A red border may detract from your blocks. Maybe leave the printed border you have now and just red binding?

I love the spools quilt! Is it the pattern by Camille Roskelley? I think once it has a border it will be perfect!

Well I really just agree what the others have said The spool quilt is so cute and just needs a border of some kind and I love your Christmas quilt and it just needs a bright red border.

That's cool that there's a group of stitchers for the very cute Betsy's closet pattern. You can make it for your granddaughter. I'm not sure what your spool quilt is lacking, it looks great to me. That's so awesome that you got your Christmas blocks all done, just in time to enjoy this Christmas. Your stars in the sashing as cute.

OMG... I'm surprised you haven't thought about doing a hybrid Bounce with Spools layout. Make some smaller Spools and then scatter! It looks great just like it is - maybe just step away from it awhile. I really fell for the Betsy's Closet pattern when I saw it all bundled into a kit with everything (including the backing) from Shabby Fabrics. I just couldn't think of anyone to make it for unless I keep it around for my first grand daughter (hopefully) some day in about 20 years. Maybe I'll just do it for me and figure all that out later. The kit is really, really affordable too. Can't wait to see your finishes and special touches! All the best!

I like the colorful border idea. There are so few orange/red blocks that I think it needs that pop.... or... you could just box them up and send them to me!~ that would solve your problem. :-) LOL Have a happy week!

I like the spools. I ordered the pattern and I'm hoping to get it tomorrow. It looks great to me. Maybe the colors of the threads blend more than other versions I've seen, but I love it :-) A red border would look nice on your BOM quilt, but I like it without the border too. Beautiful projects :-)

Cute pattern, but I, too, would add sashing between the rows. I love the idea of the stacked spools.

Hey Sinta!

I agree with PamKittyMorning about the spools quilt. I like it how it is, and I could imagine a bold, maybe plaid? wide border to frame it with.

I also like the Christmas quilt. This is one I signed up for and only 3 are done. The rest are still sealed up in the envelopes they came in!!!

I really like the spools quilt and I agree with everyone else about putting a strip of background in between. I think that mixing up the reds might help too--you have three red spools on the left and the other spools of red are mostly from the center to the left. There are no red spools on the lower right. Maybe one more dark red spool would also help the balance. Of course, I love red so that's my bias.

I like the idea of a red border for the Christmas quilt.

Love your quilts and fun to wrap up projects! I'm enjoying the spool quilts I've seen which really makes me want to sew one! Going to go check out Betty's Closet.....been eager to start an embroidery project!

I love the spool quilt! Well, LOVE them all, but that spool one is toooo cute! Maybe a little black check fabric border? Trish (Notes Of Sincerety) use Mini Mikes by Michael Miller on a project and it is the perfect addition with primary color.

wow lots done! you spool quilt... well maybe put sashing between blocks? it's strange because the bobine's not always on the same straigh line so stashing will help. Your christmas quilt is amazing. love it and yes bright red border will be the little sometings. ... doll quilt so pretty for a little girl! have nice stitching days!

I, too, love Pam's idea for Spools...and I love your Christmas setting...yes, just a red border and it's finished!

I very much like your spools, and I like the idea of sashing, but I would take it a step further and add wedges of BG fabric, and then cut on a skewed angle. No need for straight sashing, and it would look like they were tossed into a box full of delicious thread. If I could sew an accurate 1/4" seam, I might use cute spools like this as a border on a bed size creation.

I love your spool quilt! I think separating them with sashing would do the trick stop them from blending together. I really like the variety of the black and gray. Can't wait to see what you do!

Karen said...

I am so crazy about all the spool quilts I've been seeing and yours is wonderful! I think the quilt needs more width - so maybe sashings between the spools. I like the black and gray together. Can't wait to see the finished project.

Sorry, but I totally disagree with everyone who said to add sashing between your spools. That would destroy the whole idea of stacked spools of thread. How about arranging them in rows (vertical or horizontal) of like colors? That way it would look like a VERY organized thread box! I also think it needs no border. The holiday quilt, however, would look great with a red border to set it off. Great work at finishing your projects - hope it inspires me to do the same! Maybe if I stopped typing and started sewing...

I had the exact same issue with my big Spools quilt. I got to the point where I thought about just making a small wall hanging, but what to do with all the blocks I made? And why does the big spools pattern not look as cute as the small spools pattern, more blocks should equal more cuteness in my book. What's a quilter to do? I think I would leave it be and hope that when it's quilted it will be more appealing.

Yes to the big red border on your FQS Mystery BOM!

I think your spools are adorable. And yes, I think your Kate Spain quilt would look good with a big red border. That's the quilt I'm working on in BOM Rehab. Do I send you a picture or just let you know when I've posted about it?

Sinta, I really like your "spools" blocks. I think it would look better if you put a sashing in between each row... maybe either a white or a bold color... pink, red or what have you.
It would help the spools stand out better from each other. Are you putting on a border? Just wondering.
It looks great.
